Having a carbon monoxide alarm is the only safe way to detect carbon monoxide - a colorless, odorless, tasteless and deadly gas - in your home.
Every home with at least one fuel burning appliance or heater, attached garage, or fireplace should have a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. If a home has only one CO alarm, it should be installed in the main bedroom or in a hallway outside of the sleeping area.
It's recommended that a carbon monoxide alarm be installed on every level of the home and in sleeping areas. Alarms should be placed at least 15 feet away from fuel-burning appliances. Make sure nothing is covering or obstructing the unit. Don't place the unit in dead air spaces or next to a window or door. Test the CO alarm once a month by pressing the Test/Reset button. Remember to unplug the unit monthly and vacuum it with a soft brush attachment, or wipe it with a clean, dry cloth to remove accumulated dust.
